Episode 1: Unbecoming by Rebecca Scherm
Unbecoming centers on a girl named Grace. When the novel begins, Grace is 21 and living in Paris under an assumed name. We quickly learn that, three years earlier, Grace was involved in the robbery of an estate in her hometown of Garland, Tennessee, with two men who were caught while she escaped. We learn too that the men are about to be released, and that she is afraid they will come after her. The story unfolds from there, moving back and forth in time, between her life in Paris, where she works for a crooked antiques dealer and waits to see if the men will find her, and her adolescence in Tennessee, including the story of a complicated love triangle and the bungled heist.
"It's sort of a thriller, sort of a coming of age tale, sort of a psychological suspense novel, sort of a love story," Rebecca Scherm tells us.
Host Cyd Oppenheimer engages in conversation with guest readers Jessica Sager and Emma Sokoloff-Rubin, talking about what they make of the ending, who the lovers really are in this love story, and what it ultimately means to be good.
